Jurmalas Centrala Biblioteka

August 2019
Jurmala is a seaside resort not far away from the Latvian capital Riga. The city with its 55 000 inhabitants consists of a string of small resorts and there is no given city centre. In the autumn of 2018 the municipality opened Jurmala Culture Centre which includes premises for conferences, concerts, exhibitions and festive events. Jurmalas Centrala Biblioteka (Jurmala Central Library) is located in the complex. The buildings are well adjusted to the surrounding beautiful pine wood. The library premises are modern and sophisticated. There are a big combined lecture and exhibition room, quiet study rooms and a spacious children´s department. The collection is a mixture of non-attractive older books and new acquisitions. There is a strong emphasis on local history and program activities. There could be more comfortable seats. In this library of two floors there is only one elevator, as a service especially for the disabled. FOUR stars: Very good.
