Deichman Bjørvika, Oslo

March 2022
Deichman Bjørvika is the new main library in Oslo, opened in the spring of 2020. It replaces the old main library from the 1930´s. The new library is a landmark building situated close to other important institutions; the opera house, the Munch museum and the main railway station. The whole Bjørvika at the seaside is considered an attractive area. The library building has six floors. All floors open to an inner atrium, stretching through the whole building. Acoustics are pleasant, there is no disruptive noice in the building. The overall atmosphere is inviting. There is ample seating throughout the library as well as secluded rooms, to work, study or hold meetings. In addition to this there is a large auditorium. The collection of books and other is very good and well exposed. A part of the collection is in the open underground magazine. There is a restaurant and a café but also an area for having your own packed lunch. The library has for a short time become an important and popular meeting place, not least among students and families. However the children´s area, as well as the area for newspapers and journals, are undersized. There are today outsourced areas which the library without problems can take over and use. For example on the ground floor. The area of an ”outdoor life” shop would be a great place for newspapers and journals. SIX stars: Exceptional
